Millie Bobby Brown was eleven years old when she shaved her head to play Eleven, and by the time the series finale hit Netflix on December 31, 2025, she was a married 21-year-old producer with three Netflix features of her own. The Stranger Things cast grew up on camera across five seasons and nine years, which is why the question “who plays who” now comes with a second one: what are they doing next? We answer both below, starting with a quick actor-to-character table, then working through the kids, the teens, the adults, the villains and the newcomers, with notable roles and where to watch everything as of now.

Thirty names covers the regulars and the guest stars people actually search for. Further down we fold in the smaller parts (Suzie, Chrissy, Jason, Vickie, Yuri) where they come up.
The Kids of Hawkins
The Duffer brothers cast the party in 2015 from thousands of auditions, and the four boys plus Eleven were between 11 and 14 when season 1 shot in Atlanta. We will take them in the order the show introduces them.
Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven
Eleven is the psychokinetic test subject who escapes Hawkins National Laboratory in November 1983 and ends up adopted by Hopper as Jane Hopper. Brown had a handful of credits before this (a child version of Alice in ABC’s Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, an episode of Grey’s Anatomy) and became a household name within weeks of the premiere, earning Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2017 and 2018.
Her career since has been almost entirely a Netflix and Legendary affair. She fronted Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), then produced and starred in Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022), the dragon fantasy Damsel (2024) and the Russo brothers’ The Electric State (2025) opposite Chris Pratt. All four of the latter stream on Netflix. She married Jake Bongiovi in 2024, and a third Enola Holmes film is on the way.
Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler
Mike is the party’s Dungeon Master and Eleven’s eventual boyfriend, the kid who finds her in the woods in the pilot and hides her in his basement. Wolfhard, from Vancouver, had the busiest outside career of the young cast while the show was airing. He played Richie Tozier in It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), then took the Trevor Spengler role in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). He voiced Lampwick in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022), co-directed the slasher comedy Hell of a Summer (released by Neon in 2025) with Billy Bryk, and appears in A24’s The Legend of Ochi (2025). Outside acting, he records with his band The Aubreys.
Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson
Dustin is the mouthy scientist of the group, owner of a baby demogorgon named Dart and the one character who bonds with Steve Harrington into a genuine comic duo. Matarazzo, who grew up in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, has cleidocranial dysplasia, which the Duffers wrote into the character rather than ignore. He is a theater kid first: he was in Les Misérables on Broadway as a child, played Jared Kleinman in Dear Evan Hansen in 2022 and Tobias in the 2024 Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford. He also hosted the Netflix prank series Prank Encounters and starred in the Paramount+ teen comedy Honor Society (2022).
Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair
Lucas is the pragmatist with the wrist rocket, the first to distrust Eleven and later the one who tries to balance basketball-team popularity with the party in season 4. McLaughlin is from Carmel, New York, and played young Simba in The Lion King on Broadway before Hawkins came calling. His film work includes Concrete Cowboy (2021, Netflix), in which he stars opposite Idris Elba, the LeBron James biopic Shooting Stars (2023, Peacock) in which he plays young LeBron, and Jeymes Samuel’s The Book of Clarence (2024). He received multiple NAACP Image Award nominations for Stranger Things.
Noah Schnapp as Will Byers
Will is the boy whose disappearance in the pilot sets the whole series in motion. Schnapp spent most of season 1 off screen, then became the show’s emotional center as the kid who never fully escapes the Upside Down. He grew up in Scarsdale, New York, voiced Charlie Brown in The Peanuts Movie (2015) and played Adam Sandler’s son in Hubie Halloween (2020, Netflix). He came out as gay in a TikTok in January 2023, a moment many viewers connected to Will’s season 4 arc, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2024 while shooting season 5.
Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield
Max arrives in season 2 as the skateboarding Californian transplant with an abusive stepbrother, and by season 4 she carries the show’s most-watched sequence, the “Running Up That Hill” escape from Vecna that sent Kate Bush back to the top of the charts 37 years after release. Sink had already played Annie on Broadway and worked with Woody Harrelson in The Glass Castle (2017). Her post-Max credits are strong: Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy (2021), Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film (2021), Brendan Fraser’s daughter in The Whale (2022) and a 2025 Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Play for John Proctor Is the Villain. She joins Tom Holland in the next Marvel outing, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, due July 31, 2026, and for the full picture of what that film has lined up, our spiderman brand new day piece lays out cast and plot details.
The Teens: Nancy, Jonathan, Steve, Robin and Company

The high school tier started as a love triangle and ended as the show’s most reliable comedy engine. Three of these actors have been there since the pilot.
Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler
Nancy is Mike’s older sister, who transforms from studious girlfriend into the series’ shotgun-wielding investigative reporter after her best friend Barb is killed in season 1. Dyer, from Nashville, studied at NYU’s Gallatin School before the show. Her best outside performance is the Catholic-school comedy Yes, God, Yes (2019), and she has two Netflix thrillers on her résumé, Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) and Things Heard & Seen (2021), the latter alongside Amanda Seyfried.
Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers
Jonathan is Joyce’s older son, the photographer who ends up with Nancy and spends season 4 in a van with Argyle. Heaton grew up in Yorkshire and was drumming in the band Comanechi before acting. He played Sam Guthrie in The New Mutants (2020), the horror-adjacent Marvel film Fox shelved for years, and starred in the Spanish gothic thriller Marrowbone (2017). Heaton and Natalia Dyer have been a couple since the early seasons, which is partly why their on-screen pairing reads so lived-in.
Joe Keery as Steve Harrington
Steve was written as a disposable jock and ended up the fan favorite, thanks to his season 2 turn as reluctant babysitter and that nail-studded baseball bat. Keery, from Newburyport, Massachusetts, has the most interesting career of the group outside the show. He played the antagonist streamer in Free Guy (2021), the rideshare killer in Spree (2020) and, best of all, Jon Hamm’s weaselly son Gator Tillman in Fargo season 5 (FX and Hulu, 2023 to 2024). He also records as Djo; his 2022 song “End of Beginning” went viral on TikTok in 2024 and reached the Billboard Hot 100 top 20, and the follow-up album The Crux arrived in 2025.
Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley
Robin joins in season 3 as Steve’s Scoops Ahoy coworker, the Russian-code-cracking band nerd who tells him she is gay in the Starcourt Mall bathroom. Hawke, born in New York to Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, had just come off the 2017 BBC Little Women when she was cast. Since then she has worked with Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 2019), Wes Anderson (Asteroid City, 2023) and Bradley Cooper (Maestro, 2023), starred in Netflix’s Do Revenge (2022), led her father’s Flannery O’Connor film Wildcat (2023) and voiced Anxiety, the breakout character of Pixar’s Inside Out 2 (2024), which is on Disney+.
Joseph Quinn as Eddie Munson
Eddie only lasts one season, but the Hellfire Club’s metalhead Dungeon Master became the breakout of 2022 on the strength of his Metallica “Master of Puppets” solo on a trailer roof in the Upside Down. Quinn’s run since has been remarkable: the lead opposite Lupita Nyong’o in A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), the unhinged co-emperor Geta in Gladiator II (2024), a Navy SEAL in Alex Garland’s Warfare (2025) and Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). He also had a small part in Game of Thrones season 7, one of two Hawkins residents with a Westeros credit.
Eduardo Franco as Argyle
Argyle is Jonathan’s stoner pizza-delivery friend in season 4, the Surfer Boy Pizza driver who provides California comic relief while the Byers family chases Eleven across the country. Franco was already a familiar face from Booksmart (2019), the Netflix comedy The Package (2018) and Netflix’s mockumentary American Vandal. The role was popular enough that many fans expected him back; he did not return for season 5 as a regular.
Dacre Montgomery as Billy Hargrove
Billy is Max’s stepbrother, the mulleted bully who becomes the Mind Flayer’s host in season 3 and gets a redemptive death at Starcourt. Montgomery, from Perth, played the Red Ranger in the 2017 Power Rangers reboot right before the show, and later starred in the romantic comedy The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020) and the sci-fi thriller Spiderhead (2022, Netflix). Billy Hargrove returns briefly in season 4 as a Vecna-induced vision.
Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair
Erica is Lucas’s little sister, who started as a two-line scene-stealer in season 2 (“Code Shut Your Mouth”) and was promoted to series regular for season 4 after her Starcourt vent-crawling heroics in season 3. Ferguson, from Atlanta, also led the Netflix Halloween comedy The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022) with Marlon Wayans.
The Adults: Joyce, Hopper and the Grown-Up Cast
Season 1 sold itself on two names: Winona Ryder, in her first television lead, and David Harbour, a reliable New York character actor finally handed a leading role.
Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers
Joyce is the chain-smoking single mother who strings Christmas lights across her living room to talk to her missing son, and Ryder’s performance in those early episodes is still the show’s best piece of acting. Her casting was a deliberate 1980s signal: this is the star of Beetlejuice (1988), Heathers (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Reality Bites (1994), Little Women (1994) and Girl, Interrupted (1999). She earned a Golden Globe nomination for season 1 and shared the cast’s 2017 SAG Award for ensemble in a drama series.
Between seasons she played Evelyn Finkel in HBO’s The Plot Against America (2020) and returned as Lydia Deetz in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), which reunited her with Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara’s Delia; that Burton sequel is a good entry point if you want more of what O’Hara does with a dinner-party scene. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice streams on Max.
David Harbour as Jim Hopper
Hopper is Hawkins’ police chief, a grieving father who becomes Eleven’s adoptive dad, apparently dies at Starcourt in 1985 and spends season 4 in a Kamchatka prison camp. Harbour, from White Plains, New York, had spent 15 years in supporting parts (Brokeback Mountain, Revolutionary Road, End of Watch, The Newsroom) before this. He won the 2018 SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series and a Critics’ Choice Award, and was Emmy-nominated in 2017 and 2018.
His film career took off on the back of Hopper: the title role in Hellboy (2019), Red Guardian in Black Widow (2021) and Thunderbolts (2025) for Marvel, the Santa-with-a-sledgehammer action comedy Violent Night (2022) and the Netflix family film We Have a Ghost (2023). He also voiced Jack Salter in Gran Turismo (2023). Thunderbolts streams on Disney+, Violent Night on Peacock.
Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman
Murray is the conspiracy-theorist private investigator in the Illinois bunker who ships Joyce and Hopper harder than anyone, gets Nancy and Jonathan to admit their feelings over vodka and learns karate before season 4. Gelman arrives in season 2 as a guest and was bumped to regular in season 4. He is the Martin of Fleabag (Amazon Prime Video), the godfather in Judd Apatow’s Netflix series Love, and a longtime fixture of alt-comedy from Eagleheart to Mr. Show reunions.
Matthew Modine as Dr. Martin Brenner
Brenner is “Papa,” the lab director who raised Eleven and the other numbered children, presumed dead after season 1 and revealed alive in Nevada in season 4. Modine was the star of Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Birdy (1984), later played Vannevar Bush in Oppenheimer (2023) and appears in The Dark Knight Rises (2012). His white-haired Brenner was the show’s most direct nod to E.T.’s faceless government men.
Paul Reiser as Dr. Sam Owens
Owens is the friendlier replacement for Brenner from season 2, the Department of Energy doctor who gets Hopper the paperwork to adopt Eleven. The Duffers cast Reiser partly because of his treacherous company man in Aliens (1986), then wrote against that expectation. He is best known for Mad About You, and he was recently The Legend in Prime Video’s The Boys and Martin in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method.
Sean Astin as Bob Newby
Bob is Joyce’s RadioShack-manager boyfriend in season 2, the show’s single most beloved one-season character, who solves Will’s map and is killed by demodogs in the lab. Astin is Mikey from The Goonies (1985), which is exactly the kind of Amblin reference the Duffers like to make literal, plus Rudy (1993) and Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001 to 2003).
Cara Buono and Joe Chrest as Karen and Ted Wheeler
Karen is Mike and Nancy’s mother, memorably tempted by Billy poolside in season 3, and Ted is the father asleep in the La-Z-Boy. Buono’s résumé includes Kelli Moltisanti in The Sopranos and Dr. Faye Miller in Mad Men season 4; Chrest is an Atlanta-based character actor who has popped up in Netflix’s Ozark and dozens of Georgia-shot productions. Both are in all five seasons.
Randy Havens as Scott Clarke
Mr. Clarke is the Hawkins Middle science teacher who explains the “Upside Down” with a paper plate and a pencil in season 1. Havens plays the part through season 4, and his “Hydraulics, Dustin” reads remain the show’s gentlest running gag.
The Villains: Vecna, the Creels and the Russians

For three seasons the monsters were effects creatures, the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer. Season 4 gave the show a face.
Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna, Henry Creel and One
Bower plays three versions of one man: Henry Creel, the 1950s boy who killed his family in the house on Morehead Street; the lab orderly calling himself Peter Ballard, who befriends Eleven in the 1979 flashbacks; and Vecna, the skinless Upside Down monster who murders Hawkins teenagers in 1986. The orderly reveal is the show’s best twist, and Bower played “Peter” with enough warmth that first-time viewers rarely clock him. He wore roughly seven hours of prosthetic makeup for Vecna rather than a motion-capture suit.
Bower was a 2000s genre regular before this: Anthony in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd (2007), Caius in the Twilight films, young Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) and Jace in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013). He later appeared in Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 (2024). He is the main antagonist again in season 5.
Robert Englund as Victor Creel
Victor is Henry’s father, locked in Pennhurst asylum for the family murders. Casting Freddy Krueger himself in a season that opens with dream-logic teen killings is the Duffers at their most on the nose, and it works. Englund appears in a single, heavily made-up episode in season 4.
Tom Wlaschiha and Nikola Đuričko as Dmitri and Yuri
The Russian subplot in season 4 gives Hopper a cellmate, the guard Dmitri “Enzo” Antonov, played by Wlaschiha, and a smuggler, Yuri, played by Đuričko, who sells Joyce and Murray out before switching sides. Wlaschiha is Jaqen H’ghar from Game of Thrones; if you want to track where that ensemble landed, our game of thrones cast rundown covers him and the rest. Alec Utgoff’s Alexei, the Slurpee-loving Soviet scientist from season 3, remains the more mourned Russian character.
Season 5 Newcomers
Season 5 is set in the fall of 1987 and released in three parts: four episodes on November 26, 2025, three more on December 25 and the finale on December 31, which Netflix also booked into theaters for New Year’s Eve screenings. Four new names were added to the regular lineup.
- Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay. The Terminator and Terminator 2 star joins as a scientist connected to the military operation now occupying Hawkins, the biggest piece of 1980s stunt casting since Englund.
- Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler. Mike and Nancy’s little sister was recast and aged up for a larger role. Fisher is the New Zealand actress from Evil Dead Rise (2023), which tells you the Duffers wanted someone comfortable with horror.
- Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow. A new Hawkins kid roughly Holly’s age, built into the younger-generation storyline.
- Alex Breaux as Lt. Robert Akers. A military officer and the human face of the government presence that locks down the town.
Season 5 also brings back Amybeth McNulty as Vickie, Robin’s crush from season 4, and Gabriella Pizzolo as Dustin’s long-distance girlfriend Suzie. We are keeping the plot details out of this piece; we will say only that the final season reunites the entire main cast in Hawkins for the first time since season 3.
One-Season Characters People Still Search For

A few guest roles punched well above their screen time.
Shannon Purser as Barb Holland (season 1). Nancy’s best friend, killed by the Demogorgon at Steve’s pool party, became a meme (“Justice for Barb”) that was big enough to shape season 2’s plot. Purser earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series on the strength of about three episodes, then led Netflix’s Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2018).
Cary Elwes as Mayor Larry Kline (season 3). The Princess Bride star plays the corrupt mayor in bed with the Russians building under Starcourt Mall, with Jake Busey as the sleazy Hawkins Post reporter Bruce.
Grace Van Dien as Chrissy Cunningham (season 4). Vecna’s first on-screen victim, the cheerleader whose death in Eddie’s trailer frames him for murder. Mason Dye plays her boyfriend Jason Carver, who leads the vigilante hunt.
Logan Riley Bruner as Fred Benson (season 4). The school newspaper kid and second Vecna victim, who dies on the road outside the trailer park.
Dan Ewing as Lonnie Byers (season 1) and Jennifer Marshall as Susan Hargrove (seasons 2 and 3) fill out the dysfunctional-parent roster.
Who Makes the Show: The Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy
Stranger Things was created by twins Matt and Ross Duffer, who had one feature (the 2015 thriller Hidden) and a writing stint on Wayward Pines when Netflix bought the pitch, then titled Montauk. They direct several episodes each season, including most premieres and finales. Shawn Levy, the Night at the Museum and Deadpool & Wolverine director, is an executive producer through his company 21 Laps and directed two episodes per season through season 4. Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the band Survive composed the synth score, which won the Creative Arts Emmy for main title theme music in 2017.
The Duffers signed a deal with Paramount in 2025 that will take their future projects off Netflix once their current commitments wrap, but the Stranger Things universe stays put: an animated series, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, is slated for Netflix in 2026, and a live-action spinoff has been in development.
Awards the Cast Has Won

The show was nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy in 2017, 2018 and 2022 and collected a stack of Creative Arts Emmys, starting with five in 2017 including casting for Carmen Cuba. On the acting side:
| Honor | Recipient | Year |
|---|---|---|
| SAG Award, Ensemble in a Drama Series | Full cast | 2017 |
| SAG Award, Male Actor in a Drama Series | David Harbour | 2018 |
| Emmy nominations, Supporting Actress | Millie Bobby Brown | 2017, 2018 |
| Emmy nominations, Supporting Actor | David Harbour | 2017, 2018 |
| Emmy nomination, Guest Actress | Shannon Purser | 2017 |
| Golden Globe nomination, Actress in a Drama | Winona Ryder | 2017 |
Harbour’s 2017 SAG acceptance speech, delivered as a rallying cry a week after the presidential inauguration, is still the most-replayed cast moment from any awards show.
Where to Watch Stranger Things
All five seasons stream exclusively on Netflix in the United States and worldwide, and that is the only legitimate way to watch. Netflix has never licensed the show to another platform or sold it digitally, so you will not find it to rent or buy on Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home or Google Play. Seasons 1 and 2 did get limited Target-exclusive DVD and Blu-ray releases in retro VHS-style sleeves, which now trade on the secondary market, but there is no official disc set for the later seasons.
A Netflix Standard with ads plan runs $7.99 a month as of 2025, and the password-sharing rules mean the account needs to belong to your household. The series finale also had a brief theatrical window on December 31, 2025 in roughly 350 theaters across the US and Canada, the first Netflix series episode to get that treatment.
For the Hawkins-adjacent material:
- Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the prequel play set in 1959 with a young Henry Creel, opened in London’s West End in December 2023 and transferred to Broadway’s Marquis Theatre in April 2025, where it picked up multiple Tony nominations including one for lead Louis McCartney. If you want the Creel backstory in person, it is a subway ride away.
- Beyond Stranger Things, the aftershow for season 2, is on Netflix.
- Stranger Things: The Experience, the walk-through attraction, ran at the Duggal Greenhouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2022 before touring other cities, which is as close as Brooklyn got to its own Hawkins Lab.
Where the Stranger Things Cast Goes From Here
The show’s ending in December 2025 frees up a roster that Netflix, Marvel and Broadway have already been fighting over. Three quick observations from watching the post-Hawkins careers unfold.
Joe Keery and Joseph Quinn have had the sharpest trajectories. Keery’s Fargo season proved he can play weak and cruel as well as he plays charming, and the Djo success means he does not need acting to stay famous. Quinn went from one season as Eddie to a Marvel lead in three years, a faster climb than anyone in the Game of Thrones ensemble managed in a comparable window.
The women of the cast have been more selective and, arguably, better served. Sadie Sink’s The Whale and her Tony-nominated Broadway run are the kind of credits that outlast a franchise. Maya Hawke keeps landing auteur projects, with Anderson and Tarantino already on the list before she turned 30. Millie Bobby Brown has made herself a producer with a Netflix deal, which is a different kind of power than a prestige part.
Winona Ryder and David Harbour did exactly what the show was designed to do for them. Ryder came back as a lead at the box office with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which grossed more than $450 million worldwide, and Harbour went from “that guy” to a Marvel regular with a Thunderbolts* sequel-of-sorts already announced under the Avengers banner.
