“I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad has died,” Cranston wrote, according to E! Online.
Cranston also revealed that the two had been in touch recently. According to E! Online, he and Mitte had been texting a few weeks before Mitte’s death and were trying to set up a lunch together.
“I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future… But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed… I’ll miss you, son,” Cranston wrote, per E! Online.

This is so heartbreaking, I can’t believe it.”
A recent interview
About one week before his death, around October 5, 2026, Mitte appeared on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, where he discussed the future of Breaking Bad and reflected on life, Just Jared reported.
“I live life to the fullest. I always try. I have a very finite amount of time,” Mitte said on the podcast, according to Just Jared.
He also spoke about the show’s legacy and whether there could be more stories to tell. “That was the end of Heisenberg’s journey, but I don’t think that was the end of Skyler, Walt, and Holly’s journey. There’s always more to be told. But you gotta tell it right,” he said, per Just Jared and Parade.
Mitte had been busy with new projects in the weeks before his death. According to Variety (AU), he had been actively promoting his movie Talking to Strangers and attended a screening on September 30, 2026. His horror film One Eye Open was scheduled for release on October 16, 2026, Variety (AU) reported.
His life and work
Born August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte joined the cast of AMC’s Breaking Bad at age 14. The series ran from 2008 to 2013, Deadline reported, and his portrayal of Walt Jr. became one of its most recognizable roles.
Like his character, Mitte lived with cerebral palsy, according to Variety. He used his platform to become a prominent disability rights advocate. Deadline reported that he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and was president of The Mitte Foundation.
Mitte was engaged to Kennedy Suarez. He proposed on October 10, 2025.
He is being remembered by those who worked alongside him as a kind presence on set and a dedicated advocate off it. Norris described him as “a sweetheart of a young man.” Cranston called him “my sweet son on Breaking Bad.”
