Parker Posey misheard Craig Melvin’s segue into horror movies as him calling her a “whore” on live morning television. Then, while everyone was still recovering, she casually revealed she’s no longer doing Sleepover, the Blumhouse Atomic Monster horror film she’d been announced for just two weeks earlier. One interview, two headlines, zero warning.
The word that launched a thousand clips
Posey stopped by the Today show on Monday, October 26, 2026, and sat down with host Craig Melvin. According to NBC’s Today, she was there to promote two projects: The Mob, her new Hulu reality competition series, and the Martin McDonagh film Wild Horse Nine.
Everything was going smoothly until Melvin tried to wrap things up. “Before I let you get out of here, we’ve got to talk horror,” he said, as reported by Just Jared.
That is not what Posey heard.
“I thought you called me a whore!” she exclaimed, per Just Jared, which sent the studio into laughter and the conversation into a truly awkward spiral.
Melvin quickly cleared things up. He clarified that he’d said “horror,” spelled the word out letter by letter, and took the blame with a sheepish “I did not enunciate well,” Just Jared reported.
Posey, for her part, seemed equal parts amused and scandalized. “This is the Today show!” she said, according to Just Jared.
And Melvin? He apparently wanted an exit. Page Six reported that he asked co-host Carson Daly to save him during the exchange. Honestly, fair. There’s no anchor training module for this.
Wait, she’s not doing Sleepover?
Once the “horror” situation was sorted, Melvin got back to his actual question. Glancing at his cue cards, he brought up her role in the upcoming horror film Sleepover.
“It says right here that you’re doing Sleepover!” Melvin said, per Just Jared.
Posey’s response was refreshingly blunt. “I’m not doing it,” she told him, and Just Jared reported that she added she wasn’t doing it anymore.
That was news to basically everyone. There had been no public announcement that Posey had left the project before she said so on live TV. She didn’t offer a reason for her exit during the segment, and no explanation has been given.
The timing makes the reveal even more striking. Variety exclusively reported Posey’s casting in Sleepover on October 13, 2026, less than two weeks before her Today appearance. Per Variety, the horror thriller comes from Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures. Jacob Chase, who directed Insidious: Out of the Further, is at the helm, and the film was co-written by Bryce McGuire of Night Swim, adapted from McGuire’s own short story. Jason Blum is producing, with Chase, McGuire, and Bea Sequeira serving as executive producers. The movie is set to hit theaters on October 8, 2027.
So Melvin’s cue cards weren’t wrong, exactly. They were just about two weeks out of date in the most chaotic way possible.
Why horror fans cared
It’s easy to see why anyone would want Posey in a scary movie. She has real genre credentials. Horror fans know her as Jennifer Jolie in Scream 3 (2000), and she played the vampire Danica Talos in Blade: Trinity (2004).
She’s also coming off a major career moment. Posey played Victoria Ratliff in Season 3 of The White Lotus in 2025, a role that earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. A Blumhouse horror film with a big fall 2027 release date would have been a natural next step. Instead, the 57-year-old actor apparently has other plans.
A Today show double act
If this all feels a little familiar, that’s because Posey and Melvin have done the viral thing before. According to Just Jared, the pair blew up online in 2025 when Posey recreated Victoria Ratliff’s now-famous “Piper, no!” line, Southern accent and all, during a Today show interview.
At this point, every time Posey sits across from Melvin, the internet should probably just clear its schedule. The first time gave us a beloved White Lotus moment. The second gave us a mishearing for the ages and a surprise casting exit.
What’s next for Parker Posey
Losing Sleepover hardly leaves her calendar empty. The Mob, which she hosts, premiered on Hulu on October 26, 2026, the same day as her Today visit. And Wild Horse Nine, the Martin McDonagh film co-starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, is set for release on November 6, 2026.
As for Sleepover, there’s been no word yet on who might step into the role Posey has left behind. Whoever lands it, we can only hope they get asked about it by an anchor with very clear diction.
