Counselor, please approach the bench. Stephanie March is returning to Law & Order: SVU as ADA Alexandra Cabot in Season 28, according to Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap. It marks her first appearance on the show in roughly eight years, and it lands in a season that is already stacked with familiar faces.
What happened
All four outlets reported the same headline news. March will reprise her original role in the ninth episode of Season 28. TheWrap reported that the episode is set to air December 3.
Not everyone had a date in hand, though. The Hollywood Reporter said NBC is keeping details of Cabot’s return quiet and that no airdate had been scheduled at the time of its reporting. So December 3 comes courtesy of TheWrap, and fans may want to keep an eye on official listings as the episode gets closer.
As for why Cabot is coming back? That part is still under wraps. NBC hasn’t said what case, crisis or old grudge will put her back in a Manhattan courtroom, per The Hollywood Reporter. Which, honestly, is a very Cabot move. She has always been good at keeping people guessing.
The backstory: Cabot’s long, dramatic career
For newer viewers, a quick refresher. March first appeared as Alexandra Cabot in the Season 2 premiere back in 2000. According to Variety, she was a main cast member from Season 2 through early Season 5 in 2003.
Her exit was pure prime-time drama. Cabot was targeted by a drug cartel, faked her own death, and entered federal witness protection. Few TV lawyers leave the job quite that way.
But SVU never really lets anyone go. Variety noted that March returned as a guest star in Seasons 6, 10, 11 and 13, and most recently in Season 19 in 2018. Deadline reported that her last appearance was Season 19, Episode 19, titled “Sunk Cost Fallacy,” which makes this return her first in about eight years.
She also carried the character beyond the mothership. Variety pointed out that March played Cabot in Conviction, the short-lived SVU spinoff that aired in 2006. Few characters in the franchise have had this many second acts, and Cabot keeps earning them.
A season full of homecomings
March isn’t the only blast from the past this fall. The Hollywood Reporter (via Yahoo) reported that Christopher Meloni will reprise his role as Elliot Stabler in SVU’s milestone 600th episode, set to air November 12. That puts Stabler’s visit a few weeks ahead of Cabot’s.
The show seems to be riding a wave, too. TheWrap reported that Season 28 premiered on October 8, 2026. SVU airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, with next-day streaming on Peacock.
So what does all this mean for the show? Bringing back beloved characters during a ratings bump is a pretty clear signal that SVU knows what longtime fans love. Stabler for the big 600, Cabot a few weeks later. Somebody in that writers’ room has been reading the fan forums.
Meanwhile, about Bruno and Benson
While Cabot’s return has longtime viewers cheering, another storyline has people talking. Fans have reportedly been speculating about a romance between Detective Terry Bruno and Captain Olivia Benson, according to Us Weekly. To be clear, no such storyline has been confirmed by producers, writers or the network.
Some context. Kevin Kane joined SVU as Bruno in Season 24 and was promoted to series regular ahead of Season 27. During the October 22, 2026 episode, Benson (Mariska Hargitay) placed Bruno on leave after he became overly invested in a case involving an online community of sex offenders.
Kane addressed that plot turn with Us Weekly. “You’ll definitely not see Bruno for an episode,” he said. But anyone worried about a permanent exit can relax. “I’m still showing up every day,” Kane told the outlet, confirming he is not leaving the show.
As for the romance chatter, Kane played it cool. Asked whether Bruno and Benson might become something more, his answer to Us Weekly was short: “Above my pay grade.”
He didn’t slam the door shut, either. “No one would say no,” Kane said, according to Us Weekly (via Yahoo). He also spoke about the pair’s bond: “There’s a connection there, and I think it leads through.”
That is about as diplomatic as an actor gets. No promises, no denials, and plenty of room for fans to keep theorizing.
For now, the confirmed facts are these: Stabler arrives for episode 600, Bruno sits out an episode, and Alexandra Cabot walks back into the SVU universe in Episode 9. Whatever brings her back, the courtroom just got a lot more interesting.
